Police say the child’s death was caused by blunt force injuries following extensive forensic review.
UTICA, N.Y. – A 33-year-old Utica man has been arrested following a five-month investigation into the death of his six-year-old son, whose body was found unresponsive in a home on Armory Drive last summer.
On July 2, police and fire crews responded to 1600 Armory Drive for reports of an unresponsive child. Emergency responders rushed the boy to Wynn Hospital, where doctors and paramedics made repeated efforts to revive him. Despite their attempts, the child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators quickly noted the child had visible bruising and other injuries that raised concern. The Oneida County District Attorney’s Office joined the investigation as forensic specialists conducted a detailed review of physical and biological evidence. An autopsy later determined the child died from blunt force injuries.
After months of evidence collection, interviews, and analysis, detectives located and arrested the boy’s father, Fabian Troutman of Utica, on December 16. Troutman was charged with criminally negligent homicide and taken into custody without incident.

Authorities say the charge reflects findings that the child’s fatal injuries were not accidental. However, they emphasized that the case remains active and that further charges may follow as prosecutors continue to review evidence. Police did not disclose whether any additional suspects have been identified.
Officials credited the combined efforts of local detectives, forensic experts, and prosecutors for advancing the complex case, describing it as a coordinated pursuit of justice for the young victim.

The Utica Police Department stated that more developments are expected as investigators work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the child’s death. In a public statement, officials thanked all agencies involved, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring accountability in what they called a “senseless act.”
Troutman remains in custody pending court proceedings.
