Man who fired on state police and shot during chase near american dream mall identified

NEWARK, NJ – The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has released new details identifying the driver and six state troopers involved in a November 9 shooting that followed a high-speed pursuit through several North Jersey highways before ending in Orange.

The release comes more than a month after the incident took place.

Authorities identified the driver as Mark Boyd, 45, of East Orange. According to investigators, Boyd was behind the wheel of a stolen 2024 Acura TLX when New Jersey State Police troopers attempted a traffic stop near the Meadowlands Sports Complex and American Dream Mall.

Boyd allegedly fled southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike and then westbound on Interstate 280 before exiting onto Freeway Drive in Orange, where the Acura struck a civilian’s black Mercedes-Benz. Troopers positioned their vehicles around the Acura, and body camera footage captured the sound of an apparent gunshot coming from the area of Boyd’s car.

As one trooper warned others to take cover, the Acura backed into a marked state police vehicle with an officer inside, then accelerated forward. Troopers opened fire, striking the vehicle several times. Boyd then fled on foot, exchanging gunfire with pursuing detectives Andre Almeida and Robert Keller before being shot and apprehended.

Troopers rendered first aid until medical personnel arrived. Boyd, who had active arrest warrants in an unrelated case, was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he remains under treatment. A firearm was recovered near him. One trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries after the Acura rammed his vehicle.

The Attorney General’s Office identified the officers who discharged their weapons as Detectives Almeida and Keller, along with Troopers Jose Bonilla, Giovine Domenico, Marques Lucas, and Josue Argueta.

The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is leading the investigation in accordance with Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which requires an independent review of all officer-involved shootings involving New Jersey State Police.
