CUMBERLAND, Md. – A 24-year-old man faces multiple assault charges after allegedly attacking police officers responding to a disturbance on Bedford Street early Saturday morning, according to the Cumberland Police Department.
Officers were called to a home in the 500 block of Bedford Street around 4:56 a.m. on December 27 for a reported assault. Police said that while speaking with the suspect, identified as John Louis Sell of Cumberland, he became combative and assaulted several officers.
After a brief struggle, Sell was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. None of the officers’ injuries were reported as serious.
Following the incident, the department filed charges in Allegany County District Court, and a District Court Commissioner issued a criminal summons. Sell was charged with four counts of second-degree assault.
He later signed for the summons and was released pending trial.
