TRENTON, NJ – You are now paying a roughly 25% tax on gasoline in New Jersey, and market indicators predict that percentage is going to keep increasing as gas prices in the Garden State continue to fall.
New Jersey motorists are seeing some of the lowest fuel prices in years, with regular gas dipping as low as $2.44 per gallon in parts of the state, according to data from GasBuddy.
The cheapest spot to fill up today is at the Conoco station on Anderson Avenue in Fort Lee, where prices hit $2.19 for cash-paying customers.
In Maple Shade, prices hover just above that mark, with CITGO at $2.39 per gallon, while Costco, Valero, and another Conoco location all list $2.41 per gallon. BJ’s Wholesale Club comes in slightly higher at $2.44. Most of these prices were updated within the past few hours, reflecting a sharp and widespread decline across several counties.
Analysts note that without New Jersey’s gas tax — one of the highest in the country at 42.3 cents per gallon — prices would likely fall below $2 in many regions. The continued decrease follows a national trend driven by lower crude oil prices and steady refinery output, though regional taxes and distribution costs keep local averages elevated.
As of this week, New Jersey’s average regular gas price stands significantly below the national average, offering some relief for commuters and delivery drivers still recovering from last year’s higher fuel costs.
