Overturned dump truck, Parkway crash slow Friday morning commute across New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ – Friday’s morning rush across New Jersey brought major traffic disruptions, with several serious incidents affecting key highways and a pair of full parking closures at New York’s JFK Airport.

As of 8:09 a.m., all lanes on US 322 in Monroe Township were shut down after a dump truck overturned west of County Route 655 (Fries Mill Road). Emergency crews remain on the scene as cleanup continues in both directions, causing significant delays.

Parkway and Turnpike delays building

At 8:03 a.m., a crash on the Garden State Parkway southbound in Egg Harbor Township blocked one left lane near Exit 38A, where traffic merges with the Atlantic City Expressway. Commuters are advised to expect residual delays through mid-morning.

Farther north, a crash investigation on US 1 southbound in Woodbridge Township near Gill Lane and Woodbridge Center Drive has closed all lanes. Police have not yet released an estimated reopening time.

The Garden State Parkway northbound remains jammed from East Orange to Clifton with a six-mile backup through Exit 153A. Meanwhile, the Parkway’s express lanes near Exit 116 in Holmdel Township reopened after an earlier crash was cleared.

Turnpike drivers are also facing volume-related backups. A 1½-mile delay was reported on the Hudson County Extension eastbound toward the Newark Bay Bridge, while the Western Spur northbound is seeing a two-mile delay approaching Interchange 15W and I-280 in Newark.

Additional slowdowns and airport impacts

In northern New Jersey, moderate congestion was reported on I-280 westbound near Exit 15 in Newark and along NJ 21 northbound approaching Clay Street. NJ 17 southbound is also experiencing delays from Lodi to Hasbrouck Heights due to routine morning volume.

Air travelers are encountering additional headaches. JFK Airport officials report both Terminal 4 (Blue) and Terminal 5 (Yellow) parking lots are completely full as of 7:55 a.m., forcing drivers to seek alternative lots.

Key takeaways:

  • Overturned dump truck shuts down US 322 in Monroe Township
  • Parkway crash near Exit 38A causing backups toward the Expressway
  • US 1 closed in Woodbridge due to ongoing crash investigation

Motorists are urged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time during the morning commute as crews work to clear multiple accident scenes across the state.
