Passerby alerts occupants as flames spark from exterior deck

Denton, MD – A house fire broke out early Friday morning in Caroline County, causing an estimated $20,000 in damage but leaving occupants unharmed, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Firefighters were dispatched around 4:28 a.m. to a one-story, wood-frame home on Burrsville Road after a passerby spotted the fire and called 911. The individual also alerted those inside the residence, allowing them to evacuate safely.

“The fire was discovered by a passerby who contacted 911 and alerted the occupant of the fire,” officials said.

Investigators determined the fire began on an exterior attached deck before spreading to the home.

No smoke alarms present in home

The Denton Volunteer Fire Company responded with 25 firefighters and brought the blaze under control in approximately 25 minutes. No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.

Officials noted the home did not have smoke alarms installed. After the incident, Deputy State Fire Marshals provided smoke alarms to the occupants.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Upper Eastern Regional Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
