Small town ticket delivers big $4 million shock in Jersey lottery

Jersey lottery player scores $4 million windfall off ticket sold at local dairy

Trenton, NJ — A Bergen County lottery player turned a routine ticket purchase into a $4 million payout after hitting a boosted Mega Millions prize with a multiplier, as officials confirmed the winning slip was sold at a neighborhood store in Closter.

The New Jersey Lottery announced that the winning ticket matched four white balls and the Mega Ball in Tuesday’s drawing, triggering a base $1 million prize. A 4X multiplier attached to the ticket increased the total winnings to $4 million.

The ticket was purchased at Garden State Dairy, located at 135 Oakland Street in Closter. The winning numbers for the drawing were 17, 21, 24, 57, and 69, with a Mega Ball of 12.

Lottery officials said no player matched all six numbers, leaving the jackpot to roll over to $130 million for the next drawing scheduled for Friday.

The multiplier feature, introduced in April as part of a rule change to the multi-state Mega Millions game, assigns players a free random multiplier ranging from 2X to 10X. The feature applies to non-jackpot prizes, increasing potential winnings without additional cost.

State lottery data shows similar high-value wins tied to multipliers in recent months. In June, a Bergen County player matched five white balls and used a 4X multiplier to secure a $4 million prize. Additional wins include $3 million payouts to players in Ocean County and Middlesex County, both tied to 3X multipliers.

Since its launch in 1970, the New Jersey Lottery has contributed nearly $34.7 billion to state funding. Proceeds support public programs, including the public employee pension system under a long-term funding agreement enacted in 2017.
