Gloucester Township, NJ – A 51-year-old woman died after a stabbing and fire tore through her home early Tuesday, and her husband now faces a murder charge in Camden County. Monica Morris was found in a third-floor bedroom on the 100 block of Freedom Way as firefighters battled heavy flames and smoke, and she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 2:50 a.m.
Her husband, 50-year-old Jerome Morris, was taken into custody inside the residence after officers arrived around 2:25 a.m. and found him holding a knife and covered in blood, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
Violence and Fire Unfold Within Minutes
Gloucester Township Police responded to the home in the early morning hours after receiving a report of a stabbing. When officers entered, they encountered Jerome Morris and quickly detained him.
As they searched the home, officers discovered Monica Morris in an upper-level bedroom where fire and smoke conditions had intensified. Multiple fire departments—including Erial Fire Department, Gloucester Township Fire District 88, Pine Hill Fire Department, and Winslow Fire Department—responded to extinguish the blaze and remove the victim.
Despite rescue efforts, Monica Morris was pronounced deceased at the scene via telemetry.
Emergency Response Leaves Officers Injured
The response extended beyond the victim, as three Gloucester Township police officers suffered minor injuries while inside the burning residence. Emergency crews from Inspira EMS and Virtua paramedics treated all three officers; two were treated at the scene, while a third was transported to a local hospital and later released.
Two additional adults inside the home were able to escape the fire without injury.
Charges Filed as Investigation Expands
Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay announced that Jerome Morris has been charged with first-degree murder and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was initially transported to an area hospital and is expected to be remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.
