Wilmington Motorcyclist Dies After Crash at Main Street and Limestone Road Intersection

A 25-year-old Newark man died after a late Sunday motorcycle crash at the busy Main Street and Limestone Road intersection in Wilmington, according to Delaware State Police.

WILMINGTON, Del. – A 25-year-old man from Newark died Monday after suffering critical injuries in a motorcycle crash late Sunday night at the intersection of Main Street and Limestone Road in Wilmington, according to the Delaware State Police.

Investigators said the crash occurred at approximately 11 p.m. Sunday as a Honda Passport was stopped at a red light in the outside turn lane on eastbound Main Street, preparing to turn left onto northbound Limestone Road. A Mazda CX-5 was stopped directly behind the Honda when the collision unfolded.

Motorcycle left roadway before impact

According to the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, a Kawasaki Ninja was traveling southbound on Limestone Road toward the right-turn lanes connecting to westbound Main Street. For reasons that remain under investigation, the motorcycle failed to negotiate the turn and continued straight, striking the curb of a traffic island.

State police said the impact ejected the rider from the motorcycle before he slid underneath the stopped Honda. Authorities added that the rider’s helmet landed on the stopped Mazda.

The Newark man was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police confirmed he died Monday from injuries sustained in the crash, and his identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Investigation remains active

The driver of the Honda, a 38-year-old Wilmington woman, and the driver of the Mazda, a 29-year-old man from Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, were not injured, according to investigators.

The intersection remained closed for approximately 3½ hours while troopers documented the scene and cleared the roadway. The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the fatal crash.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video related to the incident is asked to contact Master Corporal R. Kunicki at (302) 365-8417. Tips may also be submitted through a private Facebook message to Delaware State Police or anonymously through Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.
