Alexandria Driver Indicted in Fatal Pedestrian Crash That Killed 62-Year-Old Woman

A Virginia driver has been indicted on involuntary manslaughter and failure-to-yield charges following a fatal pedestrian crash in Alexandria earlier this year.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – An Alexandria grand jury has indicted a 46-year-old Lorton woman in connection with a fatal pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a 62-year-old Alexandria resident, according to the Alexandria Police Department.

Tekaligne Shirko was indicted Wednesday on charges of involuntary manslaughter and failure to yield to a pedestrian causing death. Police said Shirko surrendered Friday and is being processed through the Alexandria Adult Detention Center. A court date has not yet been scheduled.

Fatal crash occurred in April

According to investigators, officers responded at approximately 5:30 p.m. on April 20 to the intersection of North Saint Asaph Street and Montgomery Street for a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.

The victim, identified as 62-year-old Norma Floyd-Sayles of Alexandria, was pronounced dead at the scene by Alexandria Fire Department medics.

Grand jury returned indictment

The Alexandria Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team conducted what officials described as an extensive investigation into the collision. After completing the investigation, the case was presented to the Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

On July 15, an Alexandria grand jury returned the indictment charging Shirko with involuntary manslaughter and failure to yield to a pedestrian causing death.

Police said no additional information is being released because the case is an active criminal prosecution.

Why it matters

Fatal pedestrian crashes often involve detailed crash reconstruction investigations to determine whether criminal charges are warranted. An indictment marks the formal beginning of the criminal court process, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
