Toledo Police Fatally Shoot Armed Suspect After Weapons Call on South Reynolds Road

A man died after an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning while officers responded to reports of a person pointing a firearm at others on South Reynolds Road.

Toledo, OH — A man was fatally shot by a Toledo police officer early Sunday after officers responded to reports of an armed individual allegedly waving and pointing a firearm at people along South Reynolds Road.

According to the Toledo Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of South Reynolds Road at approximately 3:32 a.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting a man displaying a firearm and threatening others.

When officers arrived, one officer located the suspect. During the ensuing encounter, the officer fired their department-issued weapon, striking the suspect.

Suspect dies after being taken to hospital

Police said the suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and officers immediately rendered medical aid after securing the firearm. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured.

Investigation underway

In accordance with the department’s collective bargaining agreement, the involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Toledo Police Investigative Services is leading the investigation into the shooting.

“We recognize the seriousness of this incident, and we remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation while keeping our community informed as information becomes available,” Assistant Chief Kevin Braun said in a statement.

The department said the officer’s identity, along with any body-worn camera and dash camera footage related to the incident, will be released in accordance with department policy and Ohio law.

Police have not released the identity of the deceased, and no additional information was immediately available.
