Police say officers responded only after the crash and were not involved in the immigration operation
POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. — A man was struck by a vehicle Friday morning after running into traffic while fleeing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Point Pleasant Beach, according to local police.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:05 a.m. on Route 35 North near the west side train station platform.
According to the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department, the pedestrian ran into the roadway while ICE agents were attempting to apprehend him. He was struck by a passing vehicle and suffered injuries that police said were not considered life-threatening.
The man was treated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital by the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad for further evaluation and treatment.
Point Pleasant Beach police emphasized they were not involved in the federal immigration enforcement operation and were not notified in advance that ICE activity was taking place in the borough.
Officers said they became aware of the situation only after being dispatched to investigate the crash.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office was notified of the incident.
ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Police have not publicly identified the pedestrian, and officials have not released additional details about his immigration status or the circumstances surrounding the attempted apprehension.
