MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A 43-year-old pedestrian was airlifted to a trauma center Sunday night after being struck by a car at an intersection in the Whiting section of Manchester Township, according to police.
Officers from the Manchester Township Police Department responded at approximately 9:37 p.m. to the intersection of County Route 530 and Swift Circle for a reported crash involving a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they found a gray 2013 Toyota Camry with front-end damage and an unresponsive man lying in a grassy area next to the roadway.
Victim flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center
The investigation determined the Toyota was traveling west on County Route 530 when the pedestrian entered the roadway in front of the vehicle, resulting in a collision within the intersection.
Police said the impact propelled the pedestrian “approximately 50 feet to the northwest corner of the intersection.”
The pedestrian was identified as Richard J. Fescharek, 43, of Whiting. Authorities said he suffered multiple potentially life-threatening injuries and was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
The driver of the Toyota, Rocco Lanzetti, 63, of Wrightstown, was not injured.
Investigators said the roadway remained partially closed for several hours while officers documented the crash and crews cleared the scene.
Investigation remains ongoing
Police said the investigation is continuing, but “improper crossing by a pedestrian appears to be a contributing factor.”
