JAMESBURG, N.J. — Firefighters from the Helmetta Fire Department were among dozens of emergency responders called to assist with a fatal structure fire in Jamesburg early Sunday morning that left multiple people dead and several firefighters injured.
According to the department, Helmetta firefighters were dispatched at 1:04 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, to a report of a fully involved structure fire.
Upon arrival, Engine 36-1 served as the second-due engine, laying a supply line to establish a water source before firefighters were assigned to search the home and assist with fire suppression operations.

Firefighters remained on scene for more than seven hours
Helmetta firefighters said their crew conducted a search of the residence before joining suppression efforts as crews worked to bring the blaze under control.
“On arrival 36-1 was the 2nd due engine, laying in to J4 for a water supply,” the department said. “Helmetta’s crew was sent to perform a search and after helped with suppression of the fire.”
Firefighters remained at the scene until they were released at approximately 8:07 a.m.
Following the incident, the department offered condolences to the victims’ families and support for injured first responders.
“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the friends and family members of those who lost their loved ones in the fire,” the department said. “We would also like to wish a speedy recovery to the firefighters injured during the fire.”
The department also thanked the numerous mutual aid agencies that responded to assist with the prolonged emergency.
