SILVER SPRING, MD – A Montgomery County mom who routinely walks past lottery displays finally gave in to a rare impulse during a 7-Eleven stop, tucked a $20 scratch-off into her purse and headed home — where she discovered the ticket was worth $50,000.
The Silver Spring resident purchased the winning Maryland Lottery 100X the Cash ticket during a mid-July visit to the 7-Eleven at 3737 Hamilton Street in Hyattsville.
The woman, who works in rental property management, told Maryland Lottery officials that buying scratch-offs is far from a regular habit.
She frequently visits stores that sell lottery tickets but typically passes the displays without making a purchase.
This time, she stopped.
The Montgomery County resident selected a $20 100X the Cash scratch-off, placed it in her purse and left the store.
When she later checked the ticket at home, the result left her repeatedly examining it.
She had won $50,000.
The woman told lottery officials she stared at the scratch-off for an extended period, checking it repeatedly before accepting that the prize was real.
The 100X the Cash scratch-off launched in January with seven $1 million top prizes and three $50,000 prizes.
At the time of her purchase, three $1 million prizes and two $50,000 prizes remained, according to the Maryland Lottery.
Her ticket claimed one of those $50,000 prizes.
The winner has already decided where her unexpected windfall is headed.
She plans to put the $50,000 toward her family’s tuition fund.
