EDGEWOOD, Md. – A Baltimore Police officer has been arrested on multiple rape charges after investigators say DNA evidence linked him to the alleged sexual assault of a woman he encountered while working an unrelated call in Baltimore.
Daniel Oxendine was arrested Thursday by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Baltimore Police Department. Investigators said Oxendine was on duty when he met the woman and later drove her to her home in Edgewood.
- Oxendine faces two counts each of first-degree rape, second-degree rape and a law enforcement officer engaging in a sexual act with a victim or witness of an investigation.
- Investigators say DNA collected during a sexual assault examination conclusively identified Oxendine as the alleged offender.
- Detectives believe there could be additional victims and are asking anyone with information or previous contact with Oxendine to come forward.
The investigation began June 3 when Harford County detectives went to a local hospital after an adult woman reported she had been sexually assaulted.
Sheriff Says Officer Drove Woman Home While On Duty
According to the sheriff’s office, Oxendine encountered the woman in Baltimore while investigating an unrelated call for service.
The woman told investigators she needed transportation to her home in Edgewood. Oxendine’s supervisor authorized him to drive her there, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators allege Oxendine entered the woman’s apartment after they arrived and sexually assaulted her.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office was contacted, and the woman was taken to a hospital for a sexual assault kit examination. Investigators said forensic evidence, including DNA, was collected and preserved for testing.
“When DNA test results returned conclusively identifying Daniel Oxendine as the offender, detectives obtained an arrest warrant,” the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives located Oxendine on Thursday with help from the Baltimore Police Department and arrested him without incident.
Detectives Investigating Whether There Are Other Victims
Oxendine was taken to the Harford County Detention Center, where the sheriff’s office said he was awaiting an initial court appearance.
He is charged with two counts of first-degree rape, two counts of second-degree rape and two counts of a law enforcement officer engaging in a sexual act with a victim or witness of an investigation.
The arrest may not mark the end of the investigation.
“Based on information gathered thus far, detectives believe Oxendine may have committed similar offenses beyond the incident that led to his arrest,” the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives are reviewing evidence and previous reports and working with other agencies to determine whether additional cases could be connected to Oxendine.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who may have had contact with Oxendine or who has information that could assist the investigation to contact Detective Golden at 410-836-5430.
The agency said its investigators are working to identify and support any additional victims while the investigation continues.
The charges against Oxendine are allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Daniel Oxendine faces six charges in connection with the alleged assault.
The sheriff’s office listed two first-degree rape counts, two second-degree rape counts and two counts involving an alleged sexual act by a law enforcement officer with a victim or witness.
Investigators say forensic DNA led them to Oxendine.
Evidence was collected during the woman’s sexual assault examination after she reported the alleged June 3 attack.
Detectives are now looking for possible additional victims.
