Springfield player hit the six-figure jackpot playing an online Virginia Lottery game

SPRINGFIELD, VA – A Springfield man started screaming and yelling when he discovered an online Virginia Lottery game had just handed him a $561,505 jackpot, turning an ordinary play into a six-figure payday.

The Fairfax County resident won the prize playing Western Wins, an online instant game offered by the Virginia Lottery.

The winner chose to remain anonymous, an option available to Virginia Lottery winners under state law.

The Springfield man described his reaction after realizing how much he had won, telling Lottery officials that he immediately began screaming and yelling.

Western Wins is available through the Virginia Lottery app and at valottery.com.

The game features a progressive jackpot that grows over time.

The odds of winning any prize in Western Wins are 1 in 3.86, according to the Virginia Lottery.

Lottery officials did not disclose how much the man spent on the winning play or what he intends to do with his $561,505 prize.

Virginia residents can play online instant games and purchase entries for several draw games online, including Powerball, Mega Millions, Millionaire for Life, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5 and Cash 5 with EZ Match.

Players must be at least 18 years old and physically located in Virginia to play online.

All Virginia Lottery profits go toward K-12 education in the state.

Fairfax County received more than $54.1 million in Lottery funding for K-12 education during the last fiscal year.

The Virginia Lottery generated more than $914 million for K-12 education in Fiscal Year 2026, representing approximately 10% of the state’s total K-12 school budget.

For one Springfield man, the moment he saw $561,505 on his winning game produced a reaction that required no explanation — he started screaming.
