UTICA, NY – A 16-year-old was taken into custody after a shots fired call on Saturday, according to the Utica Police Department.
Police said at approximately 6:10 PM, officers working in conjunction with the GIVE Unit on a proactive detail related to last night’s shots fired call conducted a stop of two parties on the 1600 block of Oneida Street.
“As they stopped the parties, one of the males immediately began to reach toward his waistband area in a furtive manner. The officers were able to stop him from reaching in that area, and upon conducting a pat frisk of the male, they located a loaded 9mm handgun tucked in the area in question,” the UPD said in a statement. “The male was immediately detained and the weapon was removed and secured. He was then transported to the Utica Police Department. Once there it was learned that the male was 16 years of age, and as such his identity will not be released.”
“The investigation into the shots fired incident on Washington St is still on-going, and we continue to ask for the community’s cooperation with the case. The Utica Police GIVE Unit is handling the investigation,” the department stated. “Safe spaces where our youth can gather are a necessity and as always we need strong community partnerships to ensure that these places remain areas where our kids feel safe, secure, and can enjoy themselves without concern.”
