NEW YORK CITY – Erick S. Taxilaga Trujillo, a 27-year-old Brooklyn resident, has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred on Sunday, at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Clinton Street in Brooklyn.
At approximately 9:59 pm, police responded to a 911 call reporting a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Katherine Harris lying on the roadway with severe bodily trauma. Harris was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.
The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that Trujillo was driving a 2012 Volvo S60 westbound on Atlantic Avenue at a high rate of speed when he disobeyed a steady red traffic signal at the intersection of Clinton Street. Trujillo struck Harris, who was attempting to cross Atlantic Avenue from north to south within the marked crosswalk and with the pedestrian signal.
After the impact, the vehicle continued westbound on Atlantic Avenue and collided with the rear of a 2018 Honda Accord, driven by a 40-year-old male, before veering right and hitting an outdoor dining structure. The Honda driver was unharmed.
Trujillo faces charges including manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, driving while ability impaired, and refusal to take a breath test.
The investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
