Camden, N.J. – Austin T. Mahan, a 42-year-old resident of Cape May Court House, New Jersey, has been apprehended and charged with misappropriating approximately $65,000 in postal funds, according to an announcement made by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Mahan, a former U.S. Postal Service (USPS) supervisor at the Sea Isle and Somers Point Post Offices, stands accused of misusing USPS credit cards for personal purchases at various retail stores in and around New Jersey. The incidents are believed to have occurred over a six-month period spanning 2022 and 2023.
Among the items acquired through these unauthorized transactions were gift cards worth tens of thousands of dollars, as well as home décor items, materials for home renovations, power and handheld tools, tool storage equipment, and personal items such as a Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner, LED fog light bulbs for Mahan’s personal vehicle, batteries, shampoo, shaving cream, food products, and more.
Mahan made an appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ann Marie Danio at the federal court in Camden on May 16, 2023. He was subsequently released on a $50,000 unsecured bond.
The charge of misappropriating postal funds carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, along with a potential fine of either $250,000 or an amount equal to the value of the misappropriated money or property.
