Deadly Police Shooting in Newark, State Investigating

NEWARK, NJ – The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on May 3.

Everett Rand, 29, of Newark, was fatally shot by officers from the Newark Police Department.

According to preliminary findings, officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting inside a residence on Johnson Avenue.

Rand was seen discarding an item in a dumpster and was later fatally shot by officers after a foot chase. A handgun was recovered near Rand.

Inside the residence, a 27-year-old man was found dead from a gunshot wound, and an 8-year-old boy was also struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead at University Hospital.
