ALEXANDRIA, VA – A Maryland resident, Robert Smith, 48, from Temple Hills, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for making false statements on federal firearms forms during purchases in Virginia. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, Smith falsely claimed residency in Arlington, Virginia, to bypass Maryland’s stricter gun purchase laws.
From August 2020 to December 2021, Smith acquired 59 firearms over 24 separate transactions. His actual residence was never in Arlington, where he claimed to live. This discrepancy came to light after four of the guns he purchased were found during traffic stops with obliterated serial numbers. Further investigations linked additional firearms to Smith, none of which were reported stolen by him.
The case highlights significant concerns about firearm tracking and the illegal distribution of guns. The whereabouts of many firearms purchased by Smith remain unknown, posing ongoing challenges to law enforcement. Senior U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton handed down the sentence, emphasizing the severity of the offenses and their implications for public safety.
