Maryland Couple Facing Charges After Child Custody Swap Goes Bad

CAMBRIDGE, MD – On May 3rd, Cambridge Police Department officers responded to a reported physical disturbance at the 700 block of Douglas Street around 12:05 PM. The incident involved A’Mere Ayi’Janae Wheatley, 20, and Keyshon Marquise Melvins, 22, both residents of Cambridge.

Upon arrival, officers learned that Melvins had allegedly assaulted Wheatley as she attempted to pick up their child from his residence.

Wheatley showed visible signs of injury. During the confrontation, Wheatley reportedly broke a window, re-entered the residence, and armed herself with a knife, leading to a further altercation where Melvins sustained a stab wound to his hand while disarming her.

Both individuals were arrested following the incident. Wheatley also faced additional charges after a warrant check revealed an active bench warrant for failing to appear in court on an unrelated charge.

After processing at Cambridge Police Department, Melvins was released on his personal recognizance. The details of Wheatley’s court appearance have not been disclosed. Further investigations are ongoing.
