CRANFORD, N.J. — Adam Sandler has started production on a new Netflix film in New Jersey, with his daughter Sunny Sandler cast in the lead role.

The film follows 15-year-old Sophie Birenbaum, a high school student who is forced to confront her mother’s terminal cancer diagnosis just as she takes on the lead role in the school musical. The story centers on her efforts to balance personal grief with the demands of adolescence.

Sunny Sandler, who plays Sophie, continues her work with Netflix after starring in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah. Most of her previous roles have come through projects produced by her father.

“Don’t Say Good Luck” is part of Adam Sandler’s ongoing deal with Netflix, which has included a series of films featuring both his family and longtime collaborators.

Filming in Cranford is expected to wrap in early August.

Sunny Sandler headlines a new coming-of-age drama now filming under her father’s direction in suburban New Jersey.
