After roof collapse crisis Bella finds forever home with her foster family in Newark

NEWARK, NJ – Out of disaster came a heartwarming ending at the Associated Humane Societies Newark, where one of the many animals displaced by January’s catastrophic roof collapse has officially found her forever home.

Bella, a gentle mixed-breed dog, was among dozens of pets temporarily fostered after structural damage forced the Newark shelter to evacuate animals for safety. When an emergency foster family stepped in to care for her, they never expected she’d soon become a permanent part of their lives.

After weeks of caring for Bella, the family decided they couldn’t say goodbye — finalizing her adoption and officially welcoming her as their newest family member.

The AHS Newark facility has been working to recover from the extensive damage caused by the roof collapse, which displaced animals and strained shelter operations. Thanks to community support and the rapid response of volunteer foster families, every animal was safely relocated.

Shelter officials say Bella’s story reflects the compassion and resilience that emerged in the aftermath of the crisis. Dozens of pets found temporary care — and in several cases, like Bella’s, those placements turned into permanent adoptions.

Key points:
• Bella, a foster dog displaced by the Newark shelter’s roof collapse, has been adopted by her foster family
• The January roof collapse forced emergency evacuations of shelter animals
• The Associated Humane Societies credits community fosters for helping every pet stay safe during recovery

A happy ending, and a new beginning

Staff at the shelter say they’re continuing repairs while focusing on reunions and new adoptions. Bella’s journey from displacement to adoption stands as a symbol of hope — proof that even in crisis, compassion can build forever families.
