ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A code orange air quality alert was issued Sunday for Atlantic and Cape May Counties by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, warning that air pollution levels may be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The alert remains in effect until 12:00 a.m. Monday. Officials say conditions may affect individuals with respiratory issues, such as asthma or other lung diseases, as well as children and the elderly.

According to the advisory, code orange indicates that ground-level ozone and fine particle concentrations are expected to rise to levels that could pose health concerns for vulnerable populations.

Authorities recommend that people in sensitive groups limit prolonged outdoor exertion during the alert period. No mandatory restrictions have been announced.
