Police say a crash on Mount Vernon Avenue escalated into a stabbing on West Glebe Road, leaving a man with life-threatening injuries and leading to an arrest.

An Alexandria man is facing felony charges after police say a hit-and-run crash was followed by a stabbing that left another man seriously injured.

Officers responded to the 800 block of West Glebe Road at approximately 12:40 a.m. Saturday for a reported stabbing. When they arrived, they found an adult male suffering from an apparent stab wound and transported him to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigation linked stabbing to earlier crash

According to the Alexandria Police Department, witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect and the vehicle involved, including a license plate number. Investigators quickly began tracking down the vehicle.

Preliminary findings indicate the assault was preceded by a hit-and-run crash that occurred earlier on Mount Vernon Avenue. Police said a subsequent encounter between the individuals on West Glebe Road ultimately resulted in the stabbing.

Suspect taken into custody

A short time later, officers located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop as it traveled through the city. The driver was identified as 43-year-old Edvin Lopez Garin of Alexandria.

Authorities said Lopez Garin was taken into custody and charged with Malicious Wounding and Felony Hit and Run. Additional details about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation have not been released.

Investigation remains active

Detectives continue to investigate the incident and have not announced whether additional charges are possible. Police are asking anyone with information related to the case to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Alexandria Police Department at 703-746-4444.
