TRENTON, NJ — Governor Phil Murphy announced today a fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT users from August 26 to September 2, 2024. During this week, passengers can travel free on all NJ TRANSIT modes, a gesture of appreciation to the system’s frequent riders.
Those who purchased an August monthly pass will receive a 25% discount on their September pass, available through the NJ TRANSIT mobile app, Ticket Vending Machines, or at ticket windows. This initiative acknowledges the recent service disruptions, particularly on the Northeast Corridor (NEC), and aims to thank commuters for their ongoing patronage amidst these challenges.
Governor Murphy expressed his commitment to resolving these disruptions, stating, “Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one-week fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT riders.”
He added that efforts are ongoing with Amtrak to address issues on the NEC, which have included increased inspections and repairs to infrastructure such as overhead wires and signal systems.
NJ TRANSIT is also addressing performance issues with the River LINE light rail service by implementing supplemental bus services and holding contractors accountable for timely repairs. The agency continues to seek additional funding for infrastructure improvements through the Fed-State Partnership Grant Program.
New Jersey state workers still on COVID-19 remote work schedules can still use the free passes to travel the state during the fare holiday.
Murphy has not reimplemented New Jersey’s back to school tax holiday.
