Delaware State Police say a man armed with a handgun was fatally shot after he allegedly pointed the weapon at responding troopers during a domestic incident Monday night.
Magnolia, DE – A man was fatally shot by Delaware State Police troopers Monday night after authorities say he pointed a handgun at officers while they responded to a domestic incident in Magnolia.
According to state police, troopers were dispatched at approximately 9:15 p.m. Monday to the 100 block of East Cherry Drive after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance.
Troopers encountered armed man
While responding, troopers learned that Kristopher Glanden, 37, of Frederica, was reportedly suicidal, armed with a handgun, and attempting to enter a residence where his ex-partner and other family members had sheltered inside.
When troopers arrived, they found Glanden in the front yard of the home.
Police said Glanden refused repeated commands to comply and, during the encounter, pointed a handgun at the responding troopers. Two troopers then fired their department-issued weapons, striking him.
Investigation underway
Troopers immediately rendered first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived, but Glanden was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators recovered a loaded 9mm handgun from the scene, according to police.
In accordance with Delaware State Police policy, the agency’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Delaware Department of Justice’s Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust is conducting a parallel review of the use of force.
The two troopers involved were not injured and have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
