Arson task force investigating fatal Jersey City fire

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Authorities are investigating a fatal fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in a second-floor apartment on Van Nostrand Avenue, officials said.

The Jersey City Fire Department responded to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. and discovered a fire inside the unit. During suppression efforts, firefighters located 53-year-old Terrance Culbreath in the kitchen. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just after 4 p.m.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are conducting the investigation. While foul play is not suspected at this time, officials urge anyone with information to contact the Prosecutor’s Office at 201-915-1345 or submit a tip online.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly blaze.
