Atlantic City Man Pleads Guilty to 2018 Felony Murder of Ventnor Resident

August 25, 2024

MAYS LANDING, N.J. — Angelo Delgado, 22, of Atlantic City, pleaded guilty on Thursday to first-degree felony murder in connection with the 2018 killing of Sunil Edla, a 61-year-old resident of Ventnor. Delgado, who was 16 years old at the time of the crime, has agreed to a recommended sentence of 30 years in New Jersey State Prison, where he will be required to serve the full term without the possibility of parole.

During the court proceedings, Delgado admitted to fatally shooting Edla while attempting to steal his car. The incident occurred on November 15, 2018, when the Ventnor City Police Department received a 911 call at 8:04 p.m. reporting a man lying in a driveway on N. Nashville Avenue. Responding officers found Edla with suspected gunshot wounds in front of 6 N. Nashville Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Edla’s vehicle, a 2002 Subaru Forester, was missing but was later recovered by Atlantic City police in the 1600 block of Sewell Avenue. A swift investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit, the Ventnor City Police Department, and the Atlantic City Police Department led to Delgado’s identification as the suspect. He was arrested without incident by the Atlantic City SWAT team on the morning of November 16, 2018, in the 1500 block of Sewell Avenue.

Delgado, who was initially charged with murder, carjacking, robbery, and weapons offenses, had been waived from juvenile court to face trial as an adult. Chief Assistant Prosecutor Kathleen Robinson is representing the state in this case. Sentencing is scheduled for September.
