Attorney General’s office investigating fatal police pursuit crash in Calvert County

Prince Frederick, MD – Maryland’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) is reviewing a fatal police-involved collision that occurred early Friday morning in Calvert County after a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle that later struck another car, killing its driver.

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General said the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on December 12 in the area of Route 4 and Stoakley Road in Prince Frederick.

Deputy’s pursuit ends in deadly crash

According to preliminary findings, a Calvert County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a Nissan sedan for a traffic violation near Prince Frederick Boulevard and Calvert Hills Road. The driver did not stop, and the deputy followed the vehicle for roughly one mile before the Nissan entered the intersection at Stoakley Road and collided with a Honda sedan.

The impact fatally injured the Honda’s driver, an adult woman whose name has not been released. The Nissan also struck a Kia SUV, injuring its driver and passenger, both of whom were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Nissan was taken into custody and hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries. The pursuing deputy was equipped with a body-worn camera at the time of the incident.

Independent review underway

The IID, assisted by the Maryland State Police Crash Team, is investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision, including the events surrounding the attempted stop and pursuit.
