TEANECK, N.J. — A man experiencing a mental health crisis was safely taken into custody Monday morning following a standoff with police that lasted several hours, authorities said.
Teaneck police responded to a call around 7:39 a.m. about a man in distress at an apartment on Ayers Court. Officers attempted to make contact with the man, who refused to allow them access to his residence or comply with their orders. Determining that he needed mental health intervention, police requested the assistance of the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team, along with crisis negotiators and emergency medical personnel.
Nearby apartments were evacuated as officials established a secure perimeter. Crisis negotiators worked to de-escalate the situation, but repeated efforts to persuade the man to exit the apartment were unsuccessful.
Eventually, officers made a forced entry into the apartment and took the man into custody without incident. He was transported to New Bridge Medical Center, where he is receiving medical and mental health care. No injuries were reported during the operation, and authorities confirmed that no charges will be filed against the man.
