BATESVILLE, Va. — A 73-year-old man was arrested Wednesday following an eight-hour standoff with Albemarle County Police after a neighborhood dispute escalated into gunfire. The incident took place in the 2600 block of Heartwood Road in the Batesville area.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting on August 28, 2024. Upon investigation, police determined that Craig Thomson Handley of Batesville had discharged a firearm during a confrontation with a neighbor. During the altercation, Handley also struck a parked vehicle with his all-terrain vehicle (ATV) before retreating to his home.
Despite repeated attempts by officers to gain his compliance, Handley refused to cooperate, leading to an extended standoff. After approximately eight hours, police were able to take Handley into custody without further incident. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Handley has been booked into the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail on multiple charges, including reckless handling of a firearm, attempted malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and hit and run involving unattended property. He is awaiting a court appearance.
The Albemarle County Police Department has not released further details about the incident but confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
