BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ – Police in Berkeley Township are advising residents of multiple sightings of a black bear within the township.
The Berkeley Township Police Department said there is no cause for alarm as it is natural for bears to be spotted in the wild in New Jersey.
“There have been some black bear sightings in Berkeley Township. Although it seems unusual it does occur from time to time,” the department said Sunday. “Black bears are native to New Jersey. They are most prevalent in the northern part of the state but do occasionally make their way to our area.”
Police warned residents that black bears typically do not pose a threat to humans and are generally frightened by people, but gave tips on how to deter bears from being repeat visitors on their property.
“It’s important to remember that although they are generally scared of humans they are opportunistic feeders and they do end up in areas outside of their normal habitat,” the department added. “It goes without saying that you shouldn’t attempt to make contact with a bear. Like any wild animal they can be dangerous. Seeing one can be alarming but there are some things you can do to prevent them from going by you.”
The Berkeley Police Department advises residents to read the black bear homeowner fact sheet published by the NJDEP to be more aware of how to handle and avoid encounters with black bears.
