BOSTON, MA—Early Sunday morning, Boston Police officers from the Anti-Crime Unit of District B-2 (Roxbury) arrested Avery Combs Jr., 32, of Dorchester, and Jashun Cooley, 38, of Roxbury, following a series of events that started with a traffic violation. The arrests occurred around 1:12 AM near Erie Street and Washington Street.
The sequence of events began when officers noticed a vehicle failing to obey a ‘No Turn on Red’ sign and subsequently speeding. After attempting to pull over the vehicle using emergency lights and sirens, additional police units were called to assist when the vehicle failed to stop. The car was eventually halted at 16 Bullard Street.
As police approached the vehicle, they observed Combs Jr., the driver, making suspicious movements towards the floor of the car. Despite commands to exit the vehicle, Combs Jr. resisted, leading to a violent struggle during which the front passenger, Cooley, tried to pull him back into the vehicle. Both individuals were eventually subdued and handcuffed.
Further complications arose with a rear passenger who also refused to exit the vehicle initially but was later handcuffed without further incident.
A search of the vehicle uncovered two firearms: a Ruger SR9C and a Smith & Wesson SW9V, both with rounds in the chamber and obliterated serial numbers. The discovery led to multiple charges against Combs Jr. and Cooley, including unlawful possession of a firearm, ammunition, a large capacity feeding device, and defacement of a firearm serial number.
Cooley faces additional charges of failing to stop for police and resisting arrest. Both suspects are set to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
