Racecar motor number leads Hyattsville man to $100K Pick 5 win
HYATTSVILLE, MD – A longtime lottery player from Prince George’s County used a number tied to his racecar hobby to win big, scoring two $50,000 Pick 5 prizes in the Nov. 14 evening drawing.
The Hyattsville man selected 94242, a number that came from a stock motor he bought for his racecar several years ago. He has played it consistently ever since.
On the day of the drawing, he purchased two separate Pick 5 tickets from the BP gas station at 4501 Eastern Avenue in Mount Rainier. Later that evening, while checking lottery results, he noticed that the Pick 4 numbers drawn were 9424 — just one digit off his usual Pick 5 combination. Moments later, he discovered that his full number hit straight in Pick 5.
He then informed his wife and asked her to confirm the winnings by scanning the tickets. Upon scanning, she confirmed both were $50,000 winners and held on to the tickets until the couple claimed the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Nov. 21.
The winner plans to donate a portion of his winnings to a charity with his grandchildren to demonstrate the value of giving back. He also intends to pay off a new truck and invest the remainder.
The BP station that sold the winning tickets will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery, $500 for each winning ticket.
