Brick mayoral challeger retreats from debate after Mayor Lisa Crate accepts challenge

BRICK, NJ – A political showdown that could have defined Brick Township’s mayoral race fizzled last week after challegner Madeline Iannarone, abruptly declined to face off against incumbent Mayor Lisa Crate.

Crate formally accepted an invitation to debate her opponent, Madeline Iannarone, only for the Brick Township Republican Party to pull back.

The decision came after the Make Brick Great Again campaign posted a statement refusing what it called a “last-minute debate request,” accusing the Democratic mayor and her running mates of misleading residents at a recent public forum.

In the statement shared online, the Iannarone campaign said it “will not waste time legitimizing dishonesty by sharing another stage with Lisa Crate.”

The GOP campaign defended its choice, saying its focus remains on “the people of Brick,” highlighting door-to-door outreach and community events over what it described as “political theater.” The post also reaffirmed the campaign’s slogan, pledging “truth, accountability, and a plan to Make Brick Great Again.”

Crate, who was appointed mayor last year following John Ducey’s resignation, has been running on a platform of fiscal management and community stability. Her campaign quickly accepted the debate invitation, signaling readiness to engage Iannarone in a public exchange before Election Day.

Despite the setback, Crate’s team says it remains open to public discussion. The mayor has appeared at multiple civic events and continues to promote her administration’s accomplishments through the town’s official communications.

Election Day in Brick is expected to draw strong turnout as both parties rally support in the final weeks.
