Brick police warn of Grinch season as porch thefts rise with holiday deliveries

BRICK TOWNSHIP, N.J. – As packages pile up on doorsteps this holiday season, police in Brick Township are reminding residents to stay alert for porch pirates hoping to steal their festive deliveries.

The department says reports of package thefts have increased as online shopping surges ahead of Christmas.

Officials are encouraging residents to take simple precautions to keep their holiday orders safe and ensure gifts reach their intended recipients.

Police offer five tips to stop porch pirates

Brick police shared a list of safety measures aimed at helping residents outsmart thieves. They include tracking deliveries through carrier alerts, arranging for packages to be sent to workplaces or picked up at secure lockers, and asking trusted neighbors to collect deliveries when no one is home.

Installing video doorbells or exterior security cameras can also act as a deterrent and provide valuable evidence if a theft occurs. For high-value items, officials recommend requesting a signature upon delivery to prevent unattended packages from being left outside.

Lighting and awareness can make a difference

Police further advised keeping porches and walkways well-lit at night and reporting any suspicious activity immediately. Officers say good lighting and visible cameras often discourage thieves from approaching homes.

The department hopes the reminders will help residents enjoy a worry-free holiday season without falling victim to theft.
