Jersey shopper misses Powerball jackpot by one digit wins $1 million

Cape May Powerball ticket hits $1 million as jackpot explodes to $719 million

Cape May, NJ – A lucky ticket sold at a Rio Grande supermarket turned a Cape May County Powerball player into a millionaire overnight, after matching all five white balls in Wednesday’s drawing — just one number shy of the $719 million jackpot.

The winning numbers drawn were 07, 08, 15, 19, and 28, with the Power Ball number 03 and a 3x multiplier. While the jackpot rolled over, a ticket purchased at Starns Village Super Market on Route 47 South scored a $1 million payday, according to the New Jersey Lottery.

The winner missed the red Power Ball by a single number — the only thing standing between them and the multi-state game’s massive top prize, which now swells to $719 million for Saturday’s drawing. The cash value of the upcoming jackpot stands at $333.3 million.

Wednesday’s windfall adds to a streak of big wins for New Jersey players. Since the jackpot run began on September 8, 22 players across the state have taken home prizes of $50,000 or more. That includes two $1 million winners — one in Cape May County and another in Camden County — as well as $100,000 winners in Morris and Warren counties.

The Powerball jackpot was last hit on September 6, when players in Missouri and Texas shared a $1.8 billion prize, the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history. In 2025 alone, four other jackpots have already been claimed:

  • January 18: $328.5 million in Oregon
  • March 29: $526.5 million in California
  • April 26: $167.3 million in Kentucky
  • May 31: $204.5 million in California

The New Jersey Lottery also reported the results from the optional Double Play drawing: 06, 19, 28, 39, and 53, with a Double Play ball of 15. Players opting into Double Play have a second shot at prizes, with a top payout of $10 million.

As excitement builds for Saturday’s drawing, the Cape May County winner remains unknown as they have not yet come forward to claim their seven-figure prize.
