Brick Township, NJ – As snow prepares to blanket Ocean County this weekend, the Brick Township Police Department is reminding residents to take precautions before hitting the road and to remove vehicles from streets to help plows clear safely.
The department issued a winter weather alert Friday, offering drivers safety guidance and a reminder about New Jersey’s laws regarding snow and ice removal from vehicles.
Drivers urged to prepare and clear vehicles completely
Before traveling, police advise motorists to check vehicle equipment, ensure tires are properly inflated, and top off windshield washer fluid with a de-icing solution. Drivers should also keep an emergency kit in their vehicles containing essentials such as a flashlight, jumper cables, blanket, and small shovel.
Officers emphasized the importance of fully clearing snow and ice from all surfaces of a vehicle — including the hood, roof, trunk, and lights — before driving. Under NJ Title 39:4-77.1, drivers can face fines ranging from $25 to $75 for failing to do so, and up to $1,000 if ice or snow causes injury or property damage.
Safety on the roads and around plows
Police are urging residents to slow down, increase following distances to at least 8 to 10 seconds, and keep headlights on in snowy conditions. Motorists should avoid using cruise control on slick roads and maintain a safe distance from snowplows and salt trucks.

Finally, residents are reminded to move parked vehicles off streets when snow is expected to allow Public Works crews to plow efficiently and keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles.
