Berkeley township warns of up to six inches of snow overnight

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A winter storm is expected to bring up to six inches of snow to Berkeley Township early Sunday morning, prompting local officials to warn residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

The storm is forecast to begin around 1 a.m. and continue for several hours, with temperatures plunging into the single digits through Monday.

Town officials said plow crews are standing by and will begin clearing roads once four to five inches of snow have accumulated.

Town prepares for major snow event
The Berkeley Township Department of Public Works said it is ready to treat and plow roads as conditions worsen overnight. Officials urged residents to allow time for snow removal operations by staying off township roads during the heaviest snowfall. Hazardous driving conditions are expected throughout Sunday morning as frigid air moves in behind the storm system.

Motorists who must travel are advised to drive slowly, leave extra distance between vehicles, and plan for delays. The township’s Office of Emergency Management also warned that the extreme cold could create icy spots even after plowing and salting efforts.

Officials cautioned residents to use generators safely during outages by operating them outdoors and away from windows or vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. The township reminded residents to monitor updates through the Berkeley Township and Police Department Facebook pages, as well as NIXLE emergency alerts.

Town officials emphasized that the next 48 hours will bring hazardous winter conditions and urged residents to remain indoors whenever possible until plowing operations are complete.
