Gunman jailed after shocking daytime shooting in Bedford Stuyvesant
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A Bedford-Stuyvesant man will spend at least 25 years behind bars after being sentenced for a brazen daytime shooting that killed an unarmed man riding a moped, prosecutors said.
Saalik Jackson, 47, was sentenced March 17 to 25 years to life in prison following his conviction for second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors said the shooting happened around 6 p.m. on May 14, 2021, near Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Hancock Street.
Authorities said the victim, 42-year-old Brandon Washington, was riding a moped through the neighborhood while looking for a barbershop before attending a memorial service when Jackson opened fire.
Investigators said Jackson fired at least five shots in what prosecutors described as an unprovoked attack. Washington was struck multiple times and later died at a hospital.
Jackson fled the scene and was arrested months later on February 3, 2022.
The case drew additional attention after the defendant’s first trial ended in a mistrial due to a deadlocked jury.
During the retrial, the court approved the use of an anonymous jury after finding evidence Jackson attempted to interfere with jurors while jailed, including discussions about paying someone to influence the case.
The second jury returned a guilty verdict in just over 90 minutes.
