Buncombe County animal control deputy attacked by dog, shoots back in self-defense

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — A Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control deputy is recovering from serious injuries after being attacked by a dog during a call on Snowhill Church Road in Candler on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Deputy D. Robinson responded to a report of a loose dog in the area around 4:00 p.m. While investigating, Robinson knocked on the door of a residence. When the door was opened, a large dog ran out, charged the deputy, and bit his left hand. The dog reportedly would not release its grip.

The deputy initially attempted to use a taser to fend off the animal, but the effort was unsuccessful. He then fired his service weapon, killing the dog. Robinson was transported to Mission Hospital for treatment of serious bite injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident, including previous reports related to the property. Per agency policy, the Internal Affairs Unit will also review the use of the deputy’s firearm.
