Calvert County deputy critically injured in vehicle collision during fire response

HUNTINGTOWN, Md. — A Calvert County sheriff’s deputy and an 87-year-old driver were critically injured in a vehicle collision Monday evening while the deputy was assisting with a fire response in Huntingtown.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:13 p.m. on North Solomons Island Road near Buckler Road, where Deputy Gavin Shuart had established a road closure to aid emergency crews working a structure fire. His marked 2020 Ford Utility SUV, with emergency lights activated, was struck by a northbound 2021 Toyota RAV4 driven by Fred Carter of Owings.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies arrived at the scene to provide medical aid. Due to the severity of his injuries, Shuart was transported by Maryland State Police Trooper 7 to a trauma center, where he remains in critical but stable condition. Carter was taken by ground transport to Capital Region Medical Center and is also listed in critical but stable condition.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Both Shuart and Carter remain hospitalized as officials continue to review the circumstances of the collision.
