Car crashes into Middletown Post Office after driver mistakes gas for brake

MIDDLETOWN, N.J. — A white sedan crashed through the front entrance of the Middletown Post Office on Tuesday afternoon after the driver reportedly mistook the gas pedal for the brake, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. at the United States Post Office located at 1601 Route 35. According to Middletown police, the car accelerated unexpectedly and struck the front of the building, breaking through the door and coming to a stop inside.

A video of the aftermath was posted to X. The video shows a woman inside the car, not getting out and an elderly woman who was narrowly missed by the vehicle.

“There were people inside the building at the time, but they were not injured,” Middletown Police Chief said in a statement. The driver was also uninjured, police confirmed.

The crash caused visible damage to the front of the post office, though the full extent of the structural impact has not been publicly detailed.

No charges have been announced, and authorities have not released the identity of the driver.
