CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Two young children were discovered walking alone on a Chesapeake street early Sunday morning, prompting a police investigation that now involves Child Protective Services.

At approximately 5:06 a.m., officers found a 4-year-old Black female and a 2-year-old Black male near the intersection of Old Atlantic Avenue and Liberty Street. The children were unaccompanied and appeared unharmed, police said.

Authorities immediately launched a search for the children’s parents or guardians and requested public assistance to identify them.

By Sunday afternoon, a parent had been located, according to an update from the Chesapeake Police Department. Detectives and Child Protective Services are now conducting an active investigation into the circumstances that led to the children being alone.

Criminal charges possible as inquiry continues

Police confirmed that criminal charges may be pending, depending on the outcome of the investigation. No additional details about the parent or how the children ended up unsupervised were immediately released.
