Police say a 4-year-old suffered overdose symptoms and was rushed to a hospital after allegedly consuming part of a THC-infused gummy left within reach
GREENSBURG, Pa. — A Greensburg woman is facing criminal charges after police said a 4-year-old child in her care became unresponsive and required emergency medical treatment after ingesting part of a marijuana gummy that had been left on a bedroom nightstand.
Sarah Murray, 32, was charged with endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person following an investigation into the January incident on Southwest Avenue, according to Greensburg Police.
Officers responded to the residence after receiving a report of a 4-year-old child who was unresponsive but still breathing due to a suspected overdose.
Investigators said Murray had consumed half of a marijuana gummy and left the remaining half on a nightstand inside a bedroom. Police allege the child later wandered upstairs unattended and likely ingested the remaining portion after it disappeared.
According to police, the recommended serving size for the product was one-sixteenth of a gummy.
Authorities said the child soon began showing signs of intoxication, including drifting in and out of consciousness.
While being transported to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, emergency crews diverted to Forbes Hospital after the child reportedly began experiencing seizure-like symptoms.
Once stabilized, the child was transported to Children’s Hospital, where he remained for several days.
The gummies were submitted to a Pennsylvania State Police crime laboratory for testing. Police said testing determined the product contained Delta-9 THC and Delta-8 THC, which investigators identified as controlled substances.
Murray was arrested on June 4.
The charges are allegations. Murray is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
