CHINA-A report today in the U.K’s Guardian newspaper claims the Chinese government is finally moving towards banning the consumption of dog meat by humans. This comes after scenes of disturbing cruelty and butchering of dogs, cats and many other animals most of the world views as pets on social media, YouTube and on television.
Videos from China’s wet markets, like the one in Wuhan where dogs and cats were treated inhumanely before removing their fur, gutting them and grilling them at the markets.
According to the Guardian:
- Citing the “progress of human civilisation” as well as growing public concern over animal welfare and prevention of disease transmission from animals to humans, China’s Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Affairs singled out canines as forbidden in a draft “white list” of animals allowed to be raised for meat.
One city in China, Shenzhen passed the first ever ban on the dog and cat meat trade.
The report notes however that the policy by the agricultural ministry in China is not a ban, but could be a step in the right direction on animal rights for cats and dogs in the country.
