WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has introduced a bill to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” citing concerns over border security and U.S. military presence in the region.
In a statement posted on social media Thursday, Greene argued that the Gulf should reflect America’s role in securing and protecting the waters. “It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America, and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as,” Greene stated.
The bill directs the Chairman of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, under the Department of the Interior, to update all federal maps and documents to reflect the new name within 180 days of the bill becoming law. Greene claimed the measure aligns with former President Donald Trump’s policy agenda and labeled it a priority piece of “Day 1 legislation” for his potential second term.
Greene criticized the Mexican government, alleging it allows cartels to exploit the Gulf for trafficking operations, while American taxpayers and military forces bear the responsibility for securing the region.
The bill reportedly has 14 original co-sponsors.
The proposal has already sparked political debate, with critics calling the measure symbolic and unlikely to advance in a divided Congress. No immediate comments were issued from House leadership regarding plans to bring the bill to the floor.
